What's Happening In Florida?

Florida's energy policy focuses on ensuring reliable, affordable energy, promoting energy conservation, and developing alternatives. Recent legislative efforts, such as HB 621 in 2025, aim for ambitious renewable goals, including 100% clean electricity by 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2050, guided by a new Energy Plan from FDACS. At the same time, the state continues to support natural gas while rejecting offshore wind.

Up and Down Rates With Duke Energy

Florida Power & Light customers are facing a significant, historic rate increase approved by state regulators in late 2025, which will add to monthly bills starting in 2026, with further increases projected through 2029. The increases fund grid upgrades and new plants but have drawn criticism for burdening residents while reducing costs for large businesses. This is part of a multi-year plan, following previous hikes, to modernize infrastructure for Florida's growth and weather resilience, although critics argue it strains affordability.

Up and Down Rates With Duke Energy

Duke Energy Florida customers will see a temporary increase in January and February 2026, followed by a large reduction starting in March 2026. This is due to the removal of storm costs, but overall base rate increases planned through 2027 for grid upgrades remain intact. Duke has already secured approval for base rate increases averaging 2% annually from 2025 to 2027, with larger increases in 2025 and smaller ones in 2026 and 2027. Some sources mention further potential hikes of 13–15% for 2027–2028 to fund infrastructure upgrades.

Electric Grid Issues Remain In Florida

Florida faces ongoing challenges with electricity due to rapid population growth, high energy demand, and grid vulnerability from hurricanes, which lead to frequent outages and recent rate hikes, despite efforts to harden infrastructure through buried lines and increased maintenance funded by state and federal programs. While natural gas remains dominant, supply chain issues for grid components and the absence of federal mandates for renewables strain resources, creating a complex situation balancing demand, supply, and grid resilience.
