Alabama’s strategy focuses on energy dominance and economic expansion by creating the Alabama Energy Infrastructure Bank (AEIB) for grid upgrades, streamlining permitting for energy projects, and securing supply chains for industries such as advanced manufacturing and technology, addressing a projected 33% increase in demand.
Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is acquiring the 895-MW Lindsay Hill Generating Station, a natural gas plant, for about $622 million. This move—primarily to increase Alabama Power’s energy capacity to meet rising demand, particularly from data centers—was finalized in late 2024. It adds capacity as demand grows, although it faces environmental concerns and potential delays related to the rate hike.
Alabama ranks third highest in the country for electricity bills, averaging around $175. Alabama Power originally received approval to raise rates to help fund the purchase of the gas plant, but strong pushback from customers has halted any increases into 2027. Although no specifics have been released, customers can likely anticipate a significant rate increase in 2028.
For Baldwin EMC customers, much of what goes into determining the cost of their power bill is out of their hands. When co-ops acquire their electricity through PowerSouth, a wholesale electric provider, they often face higher costs and increased operational expenses. The most recent change is reflected in their deposit, which has increased to the greater of two amounts: $350 or the average bill for two and a half months.
